Gaming App: DrawSomething Review

DrawSomething is one of the hottest Apps out there right now. In some of the way that Words with Friends is popular, this game is too. You’re able to play against friends or strangers, you’re able to play several different games at once, you’re able to leave comments or taunts, and you can play when you have the time to play. You aren’t giving a time limit and you can send a friendly “nudge” to remind your partner to go.
You can choose to purchase this App in both the Free or the Paid versions. Through the iTunes store this App was only $0.99, so it was worth it for me to get it. I dislike the Free versions of any game that I play frequently because of the ads that pop up. Although I’ve heard that some of these ads reward you with coins.
This game demands a login and you have to create one. You could sign in through Facebook and challenge/play against friends that way. This feature also allows you to post pictures that you’ve drawn so that you can show others your mad skills or maybe ask for advice on a picture you can’t guess. Yes, I’ve seen this done!
At the beginning of play you’re giving a short list of three words ranging from easy to hard. The easy words will yield one coin, medium two coins, and hard will net you three coins. The words are supposed to be random but I’ve seen a lot of nostrils, Rihanna, and TShirt lately. After choosing a word to draw, you’re given a clean slate in which to draw a picture of the word. In the beginning you’re only given the basic colors of Black, Red, Blue, and Yellow. You can use White if you color in the backdrop and then use the eraser to erase where you want White to show through.
If you’ve done well enough in your drawing, or if your partner is good at guessing and the answer is correct, they will get the coins and then draw a picture for you to guess. This play goes back and forth and the game will tally your best record with the person you’re playing against. My highest record was 111 before getting bested by a Hamster! DOH!
If you’re playing several games at once, or with a couple of people frequently, the coins will add up. What can you get with them? MORE COLORS! You can also use the coins to buy “bombs” which either give you better word choices in the beginning of your turn to draw or will eliminate some letters if you’re having a hard time guessing what the picture is. I’ve used my coins for both purchases. I was VERY happy to add green to my colors and flesh tone was nice as well. I’m saving up for another palette as they have several to choose from.
If you don’t have the patience to wait and “earn” the coins you can use the in-app coin shop to use real money to give you instant gratification. The more you spend, the more you save. I’ve never been a big fan of the in-app purchases but there must be people out there who use it, otherwise it wouldn’t be there, right? So if you feel like stocking up on coins, it’s available for you to do so.
I’ve been using this App on the iPad and the full screen is really nice for drawing. I have some friends using an iPod and they say it’s a little hard if you aren’t using a stylus. But clunkiness aside it’s a great game, it’s good solid entertainment, a good laugh depending on drawing skill levels, and the best $0.99 I’ve spent on an App in a while.
