Weekly Movie Quick Picks 08/07/09

Quick Picks

By Darrell Mashia

I know that when it comes right down to it, you don’t always want to read an entire article to find out if you should see a movie or not. So, with this in mind, I give you my quick picks, short, to the point reasons why you should or shouldn’t see the films that are opening this weekend. Think of it as a strategy guide for moviegoers.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra: C+

  • Why you should see it: It’s far better than I expected. Some would even call it fun.
  • Why you should pass: This film could have easily been made without the G.I. Joe branding and avoided the fact that it does not live up to fans hopes.

Julie & Julia: C

  • Why you should see it: It’s a decent romantic comedy that has a lot of heart.
  • Why you should pass: Not a knock on the film (though it’s a very forgettable experience) but if I have to read one more review for this film that makes a cooking pun I’m going to develop a time machine so I can travel back in time and drop kick myself in the face.

A Perfect Getaway: B-

  • Why you should see it: It’s a surprisingly solid and engaging horror experience.
  • Why you should pass: If there is such a thing as a formula for a horror film with a twist at the end, this film follows it.
