Weekly Movie Quick Picks 08/14/09

Quick Picks

By Darrell Mashia

I know that when it comes right down to it, you don’t always want to read an entire article to find out if you should see a movie or not. So, with this in mind, I give you my quick picks, short, to the point reasons why you should or shouldn’t see the films that are opening this weekend. Think of it as a strategy guide for moviegoers.

Bandslam: B-

  • Why you should see it: One of the most intelligent teen films released in a while.
  • Why you should pass: The film loses a bit of it’s charm if you’re not a fan of it’s Disney Channel alum stars.

District 9: A-

  • Why you should see it: It’s a slick, original sci-fi movie and lots of stuff blows up.
  • Why you should pass: If you hate South African accents and hints of racism, this film may not be for you.

The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard: B-

  • Why you should see it: The film is stocked with the Murder’s Row of modern comedic talent.
  • Why you should pass: The film is largely sophomoric and the comedy stalls for the last third of the film.

Ponyo: A-

  • Why you should see it: It has the warmth and imagination that Miyazaki is known for.
  • Why you should pass: It’s not Miyazaki’s best work, and skews to a bit of a younger audience.

The Time Traveler’s Wife: C

  • Why you should see it: If you’re a fan of the novel, you’ll find this film enjoyable.
  • Why you should pass: If you’ve never read the book, this film will feel confusing and ultimately unfulfilling.
