The PSP has an ability for you transfer and listen to MP3s. “Beats” allows you to interact with the MP3s you have on your PSP system. You simply go to the PSN on your PSP, buy it and download it. It takes less than 5 minutes from start to finish.
You start the game by picking which background you would like to have interact with your MP3 and the game. Some look pretty psychedelic and some are pretty cool, of course there are some half-assed ones that aren’t worth your time or energy.
The next part is to select the MP3 you want to play. You can choose from your MP3 list on your PSP or you can choose from the list that “Beats” has in its own game. I found that it’s more fun to play this game with your own MP3s as you tend to sing along with it.
The “game” part of this has four symbols that come down on the screen that correspond with the PSP buttons (square, circle, triangle, x). There’s a target in the middle of the screen in which you need to get the timing down. The more exact you are, the better your score will be. The game keeps count of the amount of “perfect” scores you get as well as how many button strokes you get correct in a row. The longer the streak, the more points you get at the end.
There’s also a multiplier in the game allowing your points to sky rocket. There are also random “glowing” symbols that will come down on the screen, collect enough of those for an overdrive meter that will double your current multiplier, up to 16x! Most songs allow you at least two overdrive chances, some less and some more but the average I’ve found is two per song.
Once you’re finished with your song and you’ve gotten your total score, you’ll be taken to a screen that keeps tracks of all the songs you’ve played so that you can keep trying to outdo yourself…or get a better score on a song you didn’t do so well on.
I found that there were several of my MP3s that it had issues with and you didn’t find that out until the very end when it was supposed to calculate your total score. Instead of going to the screen where it would tally up your longest note streak it would give you an error page and tell you to try another song. Doh!
I’ve played this game several times now and will play it several more times in the future. There weren’t any lags, any graphic problems, any skips, or anything to worry about. If you have a vast list of MP3s on your PSP and enjoy listening to them while gaming, this would be a good option for you.
The game is $4.99 off the PSN and worth every penny of it. I had fun playing this game while listening to my MP3s.
